OUTSIDE, SNOW FLURRIES FELL, drifting and blowing, with no accumulation. I walked down Broadway and pulled an uneasy breath. I looked about to see if anyone was lingering in a doorway, near a tree, behind a car. Nothing obvious.

So now it was a different kind of case: find Elvis, then keep him alive. I didn’t like it. Paul’s man was a professional killer. I wouldn’t have given this case a second thought if I’d known all the facts. But then, isn’t every case like this? You never know what the hell’s around the next corner; where the ghosts are lurking; who the real bad guys are?

I’d have to call Abner and let him know. But first, I’d have to decide if I was going to drop the whole thing. The chances of me finding Elvis alive had diminished considerably. Even if I found him, the chances of me keeping him alive were slim, unless I could convince Paul Callo to drop the hit, or somehow pay him off.

I pulled my phone and checked messages. Nothing from Darcy, and it was nearly four o’clock. My stomach turned sour. I tossed a Rolo in my mouth.
